Summer ‘25 Week two

Having already reviewed the basics of tennis with the children last week, we jumped right into the forehand fundamentals on Monday. We spent time working on shadow swings with each kid, ensuring that they understood the three steps they should complete when hitting a forehand. Naturally, the swings were a little unnatural at first, but with some incredible encouragement from the counselors and all the coaches, the children took to the new motions quickly.

We were ready to pick up right where we started on Tuesday, but the weather had other plans, forcing us to cancel both Tuesday sessions. On Wednesday, to compensate for the time we lost on Tuesday, we moved straight into hand-feeding forehand drills, allowing the kids to practice their new form without having to run to the ball or handle different paces. Because the coaches saw so much improvement from Monday to Wednesday, and a lot of genuine effort, we put their forehands to the test on Thursday. Specifically, wanting to end the week with a fun session, we set up targets for the kids to hit during the forehand warmup drills. Then, we moved into Jail and Fireball to see how their strokes held up under pressure. It’s safe to say that all who coached this week were thoroughly impressed with how quickly the children adopted the new grip, tempo, and contact points that we were focusing on.
